Our kindergartners had an amazing first week! Each class is already starting to bond in their own special way. We are already learning new routines, establishing classroom jobs, and working together. Our first big project has been the creation of a classroom rainbow. We started with the kids learning color words, adding them to the word wall, and then labeling the rainbow. Next, the kids got into pairs and searched for colorful objects from around the room to draw. Finally, their homework artifacts will be added next week to complete our work of art! Please note that items sent in for the rainbow project will not be returned!
In Math, the kids have learned the first counting tool we will use this year, called the 10-frame. Next week, we will learn to use our number lines for counting and adding. We will also make a human number line with pictures of the kids to display in the room! Our week will focus on friendships and community-building, as we explore the books of Mo Willems and think about all of the ways that friends and community members can be helpful. We will have Bus Safety on Wednesday, which will tie in perfectly to "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!"
Next week, kids will begin to choose books that are a better fit for them in their Big Envelopes. Once again, this is a process that may take just awhile, as I get to know your children as readers, while at the same time giving them a choice. Thank you for your support in helping our kids to learn responsibility and in learning to read/share books from our classroom! Next week, I look forward to meeting with you all again on Curriculum Night, where we will share so much more! I will provide volunteer opportunities, a calendar with themes, information about Friday Notes home, and chances to sign up for conferences, etc. if you have not done so!
Have a great weekend!
