This week, we transferred our seed babies to soil pods in a miniature green house. Many had sprouts, some were moldy & had to start over, and some just didn't quite make the cut. It's amazing how learning about seeds can teach our Kindergartners about resilience, perseverence, and being a gentle caretaker. We have been inspired by books about making bread "from scratch," and plan to plant a little wheat in our classroom pots. We are designing an experiment in which we will compare bread dough with slime (more to come on this at a later date). We were also inspired by "We Are Gardeners," by Joanna Gaines. In this book, we learned about ferns and really knowing what plants need before just watering and sunning away! Just like the kids in the book, we are going to make a plan for a garden using next week's mapping skills. Mr. Ehrsam has given Mrs. Thompson and I the go-ahead to work in the Pinney Garden throughout May, so we will go visit our plot next week and begin the planning process!
Next week, our focus words will be: HE, SHE, WENT. The kids will learn to use the "Tryin' Lion" strategy--to read the sentence, then re-read and think "does this make sense?" We will complete a Math Egg Hunt around the room on Monday and Tuesday, will continue to deepen thinking about good estimates through rich "3-ACT-TASK" problems, and will read one of my favorite stories "The Golden Egg Book." Our kids will spend the bulk of our time researching gardening and the best flowers/plants to grow in Ohio gardens near each other. If you have crafty items lying around your house, or kid-friendly magazines and you are looking to get rid of stuff, please send in anything you think might spark the creativity of your little one as they make their garden models! As always, thank you for all you do!
Save the Date:
April 18th Spirit Day--80s theme
April 19th--No school
April 24th--Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast (if you volunteered for ANYTHING this year, you are invited!!)
May 9th---MOTHER'S DAY COFFEE SHOP EVENT 10:15 AM and 2:30 PM
In our Kindergarten classrooms, we will host a casual and sweet coffee date to celebrate Mother's Day. We will serve coffee, share a song or two, and read a special book about moms. Because of limited space, we would like for the kids to try to limit the number of attendees--If mom cannot attend, kids may invite 1 different special guest. Please email me for special circumstances. =)
May 22nd--Supergames----I am looking for one parent from each class to possibly spend the day with us and bring a wagon for all of the sunscreen/waterbottles/hats and shoes. I'll add this spot to the volunteer schedules.
May 23rd--Last day for K
