Another week has flown by in kindergarten! We had our second guidance lesson with Mrs. Saridakis. She taught us about sharing, taking turns, and playing nicely. This week we focused a lot on learning color words! Students created a rainbow collage with all the items they brought in, thank you so much for helping them find the items! We learned a new song called “Color Farm” that helps students remember how to spell the words; we did many activities in reading and writing workshop requiring students to read and write color words. We added two new kindergarten sight words to the word wall, “I” and “am”. Students colored and read a paper book called “Color Monsters” and they brought it home on Wednesday. Hopefully they brought it home and read it to you! J
In math, we celebrated our 20thday of school on Wednesday (time is flying!!)! Students made 1-20 placemats, they will be sent home sometime next week. We also tried our first rich math problem on Tuesday. We read the book “Pete the Cat Old MacDonald Had a Farm,” discussed what animals were in the book, and then solved the problem: “If there are 10 legs, how many animals do I see?” Students had to figure out what how many animals would equal 10 legs. Everyone tried their best and came up with many different combinations, I am excited to try more problems like this with the children! JWe also learned a new game called “Fill the Cup,” which is another dice game, and we explored inventory bags on Thursday and Friday. We will be revisiting inventory bags a few more times in the next few weeks. Students count the contents of each bag and record them on a piece of paper.
Today students are bringing home their “I Can Read” binders. Thank you so much to all the parent volunteers who came and helped get these together! I appreciate all of the help and I am very lucky to have such wonderful kindergarten parent volunteers! Students wrote about something we did this week in their Friday Notes Homenotebook. Please take the time to read it this weekend and write a quick note back to them in the notebook! In the back of the notebook, there are two new poems. One is the Pledge of Allegiance. We say this every morning when we watch the news, however, we added it to our “I Can Read” binders on Tuesday (Patriot’s Day). The other poem is titled “Five Little Crayons”, which went with our color theme this week.
Next week we are beginning to learn about Narratives. Students will learn how to tell a personal narrative and begin telling a story to friends next week. Eventually, they will write their narrative down on paper.
I am looking forward to next week! Have a great weekend!
