This week was packed full of fun in kindergarten! Students began exploring and discussing shapes in math. We completed many shape sorts, read shape books, and worked on shape puzzles all week! Learning about shapes helped us with our pumpkin rolling activity. Students learned the difference between 2-D and 3-D shapes. They know that a circle is a 2-D shape that cannot roll, while a sphere (a pumpkin), is a 3-D shape and rolls easily.
This week, student’s problem solved with friends in our class and Mrs. Thompson’s class to figure out how to stop a pumpkin from rolling down a hill (without using their bodies). On Monday, students wrote down an idea they had. On Tuesday, students got into groups with friends who had similar ideas. They found things from around the classroom to use and then we went outside and tested ideas. Some ideas included: using backpacks, chairs, baskets/boxes, another pumpkin, books, and even a bench to stop the pumpkin from rolling. Some ideas worked, some did not. On Thursday, students worked with their groups again to figure out what worked and what didn’t work. If their original idea did not work, they revised their ideas and we tried again. Students had so much fun with this activity, it’s fun to see the ideas they come up with, how they problem solve, and work as a team!
Sticking to the pumpkin theme, students learned about a pumpkin’s lifecycle this week. On Wednesday, they read and colored a paper book describing the lifecycle. On Thursday, they colored, cut, and glued each part of a pumpkin’s lifecycle in order. We also continued to write narratives. This week, we worked as a class to create a narrative through interactive writing about the nature walk we took last week! Next week, students will begin writing a new narrative in paper books.
Wednesday was the first night of conferences. It was nice talking with some of you Wednesday night! I look forward to talking with the rest of you on Thursday. Next week is a short week, we have a lot planned and I know it is going to fly by!! Have a great weekend!
