This week was a busy week in kindergarten! Students completed their narratives and they are great! I am so proud of all the students for working so hard the past two weeks, I am looking forward to sharing their writing at conferences!
In math, we learned two new math games. “Cross Out” and “Toss the Chips.” We also worked on a rich math problem on Wednesday. Students figured out how many different ways 5 panthers can be in a cage, or out in an open field. This problem built off of the “Toss the Chips” game we played Monday and Tuesday. Students poured 5 red/yellow chips onto the table. Based on how the chips landed, students recorded how many chips landed on the red side and how many landed on the yellow side on a 5-frame in “Toss the chips.” Next, students cut out their 5-frame and worked with classmates to group their 5-frames based on how many red/yellow chips they had. Finally, we discussed the ways students grouped their 5-frames then glued them onto a large chart paper to hang in the classroom. These activities help students see that there are multiple ways to represent a number. For example, four red chips and one yellow chip equal the same number as three yellow chips and two red chips! The rich panther problem was similar to “Toss the Chips.” Two panthers in the cage and three in the field equal the same number as one panther in the field and four in the cage.
We spent the week discussing living and non-living things. Students learned that living things need food/water, move, grow or change, breathe, and reproduce. We watched videos, completed picture sorts, and had many class discussions! We also continued talking about Autumn and how we know it is Autumn when we go outside! Today we took a nature walk around the school and students noticed many new signs of fall such as leaves changing color/falling, and it’s getting chilly (kind of!!)
Today in math students began the day exploring shapes. Students had time to observe, sort, and build with shape tiles before we began math choice time. Next week, we will dive deeper into shapes and begin sorting, discussing attributes, and working with shapes all week! Next week we will also be writing a story about our nature walk as a class and teaming up with Mrs. Thompson’s class to do a fun activity involving pumpkins!!
The first day of conferences is Wednesday (10/10), I’m looking forward to seeing you all over the next two weeks! Next week will be another fun yet busy week in kindergarten! Have a great weekend!
Important dates to remember:
10/10 and 10/18: Parent Teacher Conferences
10/17: Picture retake/makeup day
10/19 and 10/22: No school
